Mario, Trumpet

Multi-instrumentalist. Master-trumpeter. Singer. Dancer. Mario Abney is a musical force equal parts Cab Calloway,  Fela Kuti, and Roy Hargrove. A Chicago native, who started playing at age  7, he formed  The Abney Project in 2010 during a ten-year residence in New Orleans. Drawing on everything from the gospel of his youth to Chicago’s trademark house, he sees his sound as a “musical collage” that shuffles genres track to track, with Miles leading to Mint Condition into the Isleys. At Adorn, he leads a stripped-down trio that channels the room’s crisp,  classy, and streamlined vibe.  Well known for their performances on Good  Morning America, the Abney Project can be found at the Jazz Showcase, Andy’s, or the Untitled Supper Club.
